What is at stake on November 3?
Tuesday, November 3, 2026 is the federal midterm Election Day. Start with the offices being elected, then use official election resources to see the candidates and every contest on your own ballot.

Explore 1,406 candidate research entries across all 475 federal races. Reviewed backgrounds and selected evidence are available alongside source status and explicit gaps; governor candidate research is outside this expansion.
Browse candidates & proposals →This list describes seats and election stages. The linked profiles identify current officeholders in our October 19 roster; an officeholder may be retiring, may have lost a primary, or may not be a candidate. Candidate names, parties on the ballot, certified district boundaries, polling places, and deadlines must be checked with your election office. The current-seat directory is background information.
Why is this a “midterm”?
It falls between presidential elections. Voters elect a new House and part of the Senate. Those results can change which party leads each chamber and the path legislation takes.
Every voting House seat has a two-year cycle. Senate seats have staggered six-year cycles, so most states have one Senate election this year and some have none.
Special elections and exceptions
Florida and Ohio also elect senators for the remainder of Class III terms ending January 3, 2029. Those are separate from the 33 regular Class II elections.
Louisiana’s six House contests: November 3 is the open primary. An open general election follows on December 12 if needed. Louisiana’s U.S. Senate general election remains November 3.
Puerto Rico’s resident commissioner serves a four-year term and has no regular 2026 election. The five delegate offices have two-year cycles.
Governors: a different level of government.
A governor leads the state or territorial executive branch. The 2026 cycle includes 36 state governorships and three territorial governorships: Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands. These offices can shape budgets, agencies, and state policy under their jurisdiction’s rules.
No presidential or Supreme Court office is elected this year. Governors have their own terms and election rules; they are not part of Congress.

Georgia and some territories may need a later runoff. Alaska’s ranked-choice counting and Vermont’s constitutional no-majority procedure are different processes. Each affected governor entry explains the rule.

Filter by state or territory, office, or cycle type. “Special” means filling an unfinished term. A regular election can include an open seat, a retiring officeholder, or only one candidate; we do not infer competitiveness from this list.
