A district is a geographic area. A congressional district elects one voting representative. In a state with only one House seat, the district covers the whole state. Congressional districts and state legislative districts are different maps.
How does it fit? The House and Senate together form Congress. Most federal legislation needs the approval of both chambers. The House originates revenue bills and brings impeachment charges.
What about D.C. and the territories? Five delegates and Puerto Rico’s resident commissioner also serve in the House. They can introduce legislation and serve on committees, but cannot vote on final passage of legislation in the full House. Delegates serve two-year terms; the resident commissioner serves four years.
When is the next election? As of October 19, 2026, the next regular general election for voting House seats is November 3, 2026 . All 435 voting seats are scheduled every two years.
